The Agency
To begin, Alta Sports is a ski shop located at the base of the Sunnyside lift at Alta Ski Resort. This shop has been a reputable business for many years, and is highly respected throughout the Alta community. The shop holds rental, retail, and repair sections, all of which require their own skill sets and techniques. It is an extremely fast paced environment that requires hard work, patience, and flexibility.
Job Description
I learned many things and acquire a skill set that will help me in the future without a doubt. Alta Sports was a great introduction for me into the ski industry and to learn about everything that goes on behind the scenes of a successful recreation business. As a rental and repair technician, I was dealing with customers on a daily basis. It was my job to provide any type of need that the shop could provide. I was constantly fitting customers with skis, boots, poles, helmets, and goggles. When dealing with rentals, it was extremely important to fill out paperwork thoroughly, and understand the type of skier that you were dealing with. Another important part of the job was maintaining our rental fleet and tuning customer's equipment. We needed to ensure our customers were equipped with the best possible equipment. Retail sales were also a part of the job, as I was learning sales techniques to fit the needs of any customer. It was awesome to show off the latest and greatest gear that we had to offer.
Goals and Objectives
Throughout the semester, I definitely accomplished what I originally set out to do. By the end of the year, I was a confident and collective employee that could handle any situation that was thrown at me. I was comfortable in any position at the store and could usually perform any task that was given to me. I learned to be flexible with customers and work to fulfill any need that they desired when they walked in the shop. My overall goal was to be able to answer any question a customer might have and assist them in any way. I believe that I reached this goal and was satisfied with the work I had put in to get to this point. Alta Sports definitely gave me the tools and training that I needed to succeed. All of my coworkers and supervisors were amazing in helping me succeed with this internship, and helped me learn quite a bit along the way.
Recommendation
I would definitely recommend this internship to any up and coming student that is interested in getting involved with the ski industry. Although it was a long winter and a lot of work involved, it was all worth it in the end. The people you work with and job location were unbeatable! I am going to thing about returning to Alta next year, and would love to work for Alta Sports in the future. I am unsure about where I might end up, but Alta Sports would be a great fit for me moving forward.
I have provided three links below to my hour log, my original goals and objectives, as well as my powerpoint presentation.
